The Shipwreck

The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island ….

He prayed feverishly for Allaah to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming.

Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements and to store his few possessions.

But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky. The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger.

“Allaah, how could you do this to me!” he cried.

Purifiying the hearts

Fawaa'id: Points of Benefit by Imaam Ibnul Qayyim al Jawziyyah

"There is no doubt that the heart becomes covered with rust, just as metal dishes-silver, & their like- become rusty. So the rust of the heart is polished with dhikr (remembrance of Allaah), for dhikr polishes the heart until it becomes like a shiny mirror.
However, when dhikr is abandoned, the rust returns, & when it commences then the heart again begins to be cleansed.

Thus the heart becoming rusty is due to two matters:
Sins & Ahafah (neglecting the remembrance of Allaah).

Likewise, it is cleansed & polished by two things:
Istighfaar (seeking Allaah's forgiveness) & dhikr."

Reality of Eemaan

Al-Fudayl bin Iyaad said:

لا يبلغ العبد حقيقة الإيمان حتى يعد البلاء نعمة والرخاء مصيبة وحتى لا يحب أن يحمد على عبادة الله

A servant does not reach (taste, acquire) the reality of eemaan until he considers tribulation (calamity) to be a blessing and comfort (opulence) to be a calamity, and until he loves not that he should be praised for worship of Allaah.
