Innovations are more beloved to Shaytan than sin

Sufyan ath-Thawri رحمه الله said,

"Innovations are more beloved to Shaytan than sin, since a sin may be repented from but an innovation is not repented from."

[Sharh Usul I'tiqad of al-Lalika'i (d. 414H) no.238, the great 4th century Imam who wrote on the belief of Ahlus-Sunnah] This is because the innovator believes he is doing something good and therefore sees no need to repent.

Sufyan ath-Thawri's letter to his brother

The following is one of Imaam Sufyaan’s letters:

My brother, use the time you have between dawn and sunrise to contemplate the previous day: Remain steadfast on the good deeds you performed the previous day, and abandon anything you did out of disobedience to Allaah (سُبحانه وتعالى). Do not repeat the same mistakes, for you do not know whether or not you will live for the rest of your day! As long as you are alive, the option of repentance is available to you, but refraining from sinning is easier for you than trying to perform a sincere repentance. A sincere repentance involves regret and a firm resolve never to repeat the same sin again.

Wherever you are, fear Allaah. If you perpetrated a sin in secret, then repent to Allaah in secret. And if you perpetrated a sin out in the open, then repent to Allaah out in the open. Do not let one sin lead to another (so that they pile up onto one another). Cry frequently and as much as you are able to, and do not laugh (frequently), for you were not created without purpose. Join ties with and be kind to your family, your relatives, your neighbors, and your brothers.

When you intend to show mercy, show mercy to the poor, to orphans, and to the weak. If you intend to give charity…or to perform a good deed, then do it right away, before the Shaytaan (Devil) positions himself between you and the execution of what you intended to do. Act always on a good intention: eat with a good intention and drink with a good intention.

Your Behaviour ...!!

Sufyan Ath-Thawri [رحمه الله] said:

"Behave well in your private life and Allaah سبحانه و تعالى will make your public life excellent.

Take care of what is between you and Allaah, and He will take care of what is between you and the people.

Work for your Hereafter and Allaah will suffice your affairs in this world.

Sell your worldly life for your Hereafter and you will profit in them both together, and do not sell your Hereafter for your worldly life or you will lose them both together."

Keep Yourself Busy in Remembering Your Faults

Imaam Sufyaan Ath-Thawree رحمه الله said:

"Keep yourself busy in remembering your faults, so that you have no time to remember the faults of others. Be sad on account of all the time you spent in the past in other than the pursuit of your Hereafter. Cry frequently for the wrongs you have committed in the past, and perhaps you will then be saved from them. Never tire or become bored of good deeds and of the people who perform them."

…When Allaah withholds, He سُبحانه وتعالى actually gives…

Sufyaan ath-Thawri رحمه الله :

“Verily, when Allaah withholds, He actually gives, because He did not withhold on account of miserliness or stinginess, but rather He looked at the benefit of the servant.

So the fact that He withheld is actually His choice for the servant and His excellent decision.”

Fear of Dunya

Are you trying to terrify me with thoughts of poverty, when the only thing that Sufyān fears is that the treasures of this world should be poured down upon him!

Sufyaan Ath-Thawree (rahimahullaah) said:

Be mindful of Allaah’s Anger in three affairs:

Be mindful of falling short in that which you have been commanded; Be mindful that He sees you, whilst you are not pleased with what He has portioned for you (of the Dunya); Be mindful that you seek for something from the worldly life and do not find it, so you become angry with your Lord.

Purpose of Seeking Knowledge

“My brother, seek out knowledge in order to apply what you learn.  And do not seek out knowledge in order to vie with scholars, to compete & debate with foolish people, to eat the food of the rich, & to gain the services of the poor.”
