Asking Allaah for Taqwa & Purification of the Soul

“O Allaah, grant my soul taqwa & purify it, You are the Best of those who purify it, You are its Protecting Friend & Guardian / Master.”

Haadith in English:
Zaid bin Arqam reported: I am not going to say anything but only that which Allaah’s Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to say. He used to supplicate:

“O Allaah, I seek refuge in Thee from incapacity, from sloth, from cowardice, from miserliness, decrepitude & from torment of the grave.”

“O Allaah, grant to my soul the sense of righteousness & purify it, for Thou art the Best Purifier thereof. Thou art the Protecting Friend & Guardian thereof.”

“O Allaah, I seek refuge in Thee from the knowledge which does not benefit, from the heart that does not entertain the fear (of Allaah), from the soul that does not feel contented and the supplication that is not responded.”

The Truth Shines Forth

“Know first that if the truth shines forth & is clear, it is not harmed by the large numbers who oppose it & the small numbers who agree with it. You know how some aspects of Tawheed have become strange, although they are clearer than the prayer & fasting; & that [strangeness] does not harm it at all.”

Soft Poison

‘Alî b. Abî Tâlib wrote to Salmân Al-Farsî – Allâh be pleased with them both – saying:

The likeness of this worldly life (dunyâ) is that of a snake: soft to the touch, it will kill you with its poison...

Woe to you! Seek knowledge

Sufyan ath-Thawri  (Rahimahullaah) said to an Arab:

“Woe to you! Seek knowledge. I fear that the knowledge will leave you & come to another people so that you are humiliated. Knowledge is an honour in this life & the next.”

The Believer speaks little & does a lot...

Al-Fudayl b. ‘Ayyâd (rahimahullaah) reported:

The believer speaks little & does a lot, whereas the hypocrite (Munâfiq) speaks a lot & does little. When the believer speaks, it is with wisdom, when he is silent, it is in deep thought, when he sees, he takes lessons, & when he acts, it is a cure. If this is the way you are, then you are in the constant worship [of your Lord.]

Abû Nu’aym, Hilyatu Al-Awliyâ` 8:98.

'Since I have known (the reality of) people, I have not taken delight in their praise nor have I hated their criticism.' It was said to him, 'Why is that?' He said, 'The one who praises from amongst them is excessive & the critic from amongst them exaggerates!'

Not permissible to WASTE an hour of my Life…

Ibn ‘Aqeel al-Hanbali (rahimahullaah) said of himself:

It is not permissible for me to waste an hour of my life. When I stop discussing issues of knowledge & debating them (with others) & when I stop reading in a book, I would start pondering & thinking when I am resting & lying down, & before I get up, I will have already an idea that I should write down & I am very keen to increase my knowledge now I am in my eighties & more keen than when I was twenty years old.

Ibn al-Jawzi in al-Muntazam, 9/214

“Deal with optional acts of worship as if they are obligatory, & acts of disobedience as if they are Kufr (disbelief), & your desires as if they are poison, & socializing with the people as if it were fire, & nurturing of your soul as if it were medicine.”
