The
prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wassallam) was asked by Jibreel alaihis
salam in the Hadeeth of Jibreel (alaihissalaam) which is in Saheeh Muslim
from the hadeeth of Umar (Radiallaahu anhu)
“Tell me about Eemaan.”
He (the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wassallam) said: “It is to believe in Allaah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, and to believe in divine destiny (Qadr), both the good and the evil of it.”
Shaykh Salih ala shaykh may Allaah preserve him said:
"The arrangement between these four (the first 4) : Eeman (belief) in Allaah is that it is the foundation, Then eeman in the angels because they are the intermediaries (they take the revelation from Allaah aza wa jal, and they listen to it then they convey it to the prophets), then belief in the Books because the angels descend down with it (by the command of Allaah), and belief in the Messengers because they are the seal of this chain, then the Messengers convey it to the people."
