Question:
Is
the meaning of the Hadith, “Whoever
covers for a Muslim, Allaah will cover for him”, that if
someone does something bad or evil and I covered for him Allaah will cover me?
I hope you can clarify this for me. May Allaah reward you.
Shaykh Abdul Aziz ibn Baaz (may Allaah reward
him) answered:
Yes,
this Hadith is authentic. Recorded by Muslim on the authority of Abu Hurayrah (radiAllaahu
‘anhu – may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet ﷺ said, ”Whoever relieves a
believer from a difficulty from this Dunya (worldly life), Allaah will relieve
a difficulty from him from the difficulties of Yawm Al-Qiyaama (the Day of
Judgment). And whoever aids and makes easy an insolvency, Allaah will be easy
on him in this life and the next. And whoever protects for a Muslim, Allaah will
protect him in this world and the next.”
·
Insolvency is the inability of a debtor to pay their debt.
And
in the Sahihhayn (the two authentic things, i.e. Bukhari &
Muslim) from the hadeeth of Ibn Omar (radiAllaahu ‘anhu), on the
authority of them both [Ibn Omar and his father Umar bin Al-Khatab] that the
Prophet ﷺ said, “The
Muslim is the brother of a Muslim. He does not oppress him nor turn him over
[to his enemy]. Whoever is in the aid of his brother, Allaah is in his aid.
Whoever relieves a difficulty from a Muslim, Allaah will relieve a difficulty
for him from the difficulties of Yawm Al-Qiyaama.”
So,
this is what is legislated. If someone sees from his brother (for the sake of
Allaah) something private (i.e. a sin) then don’t expose him nor spread it
between the people. Rather cover it for him, advise him, direct him towards
good, calling him to make Towbah (repentance) to Allaah from that,
and do not expose him to the people. And whoever does this and covers for his
brother, Allaah will cover for him in this world and the next. Because the
reward is according to the action.
As
for those that expose sins and don’t have shyness, exposing themselves to the
people; then they shame themselves. Therefore, they are not the ones that you
cover up for. Like the one that drinks alcohol in front of the people, in the
market and gathering places, they have shamed themselves. I ask Allaah Al-’Afiya (wellness).
In addition, the one that does other transgressions openly and doesn’t care,
then his affair is to be taken to the guardians [those in charge of affairs].
If they will be deterrence for those like him and uphold the punishment on him
then raise his affair [to them]. For this is not the place to cover up the one
who exposes and announces his sins. We ask Allah for Al-’Afiya.
