Benefits (Fadl) of Wudhu - Lesson 4

Siwaak
** (The Siwaak which is sometimes called the 'Miswak' is a cleaning tool taken from the Arak tree.)

Abi Huraira (recorded in Ahmed/Maalik) that the Prophet صلّى اللَّهُ عليه وسلّم said:

"If it wasn't to cause difficulty to my nation I would have ordered them to use the Siwaak for every ablution."
[Saheeh Al-Jaami' (5319), Sheikh Albaani رحمه الله said it is saheeh].

Imaam Nawai mentions in Saheeh Muslim that, “the siwaak is Sunnah (Mustahab: Highly recommended) and Not Waajib.”

Benefits of Siwaak - (Muslim)

Using the Siwaak is from the traits of the Messenger صلّى اللَّهُ عليه وسلّم. It is a stressed Sunnah and it is used in all times but especially for five occasions:

1.    At the times of the five daily prayers -- While beginning to pray (Using the siwaak before beginning to pray is higly recommended than at any other times);

2.    At the time of making Wudhu;

3.    At the time of reciting Qur’aan;
(Imaam an-Nawawi took this analogy from Salaah, since we recite the Qur’aan in our Salaah.)

Siwak is a purification for the mouth and that which pleases Ar-Rab (as recorded in Bukhari).

4.    When you wake up from sleep. (Not specifically for night); The Prophet صلّى اللَّهُ عليه وسلّم  used the siwaak whenever he woke up from sleep (whether day or night).

*** Duas for Nawm (Sleep) are not specific to be recited at night only (unless it is specified for night only); The adkhar is indeed a protection from Shaitaan so we must make an effort to recite the Adkhar).

5.    Whenever a person senses a change of smell (mouth odour) in his mouth. (Imaam an-Nawawi mentioned in his explanation of Saheeh Muslim).
