Sheikhul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله said:
Shaitaan wants mankind to be excessive and
wasteful in all his matters. Indeed, if the Shaitaan sees him inclining towards
mercy excessively, then the Shaitaan
beautifies mercy so much so that the human does not hate that which Allaah
hates, nor is he protective over that which Allaah is protective.
And if Shaitaan sees him inclining to
harshness for him for other than Allaah’s sake, so much so that he leaves off
being good, piety, gentleness, keeping good relations and mercy which Allaah
and His Messenger have ordered, then the human
transcends in his harshness, so he increases in criticism, hate and the
infliction of punishment to the degree at that which Allaah and His Messenger do
not love. So this person leaves that which Allaah commands, of
mercy and being good and he is rebuked for this and is sinful in this.
He is excessive and
wasteful in regard to harshness more so than that which Allaah and His
Messenger (صلّى اللَّهُ عليه وسلّم)
have ordered, so much so that he
transcends the boundaries, and that is excessiveness in Allaah’s
commands. So the first is sinful and the second is excessive and wasteful, and Allaah does not love the wasteful ones.
