Reflecting upon the Qur’aan

Ibnul Qayyim رحمه الله said:

Praise be to the One Who made His Speech (Qu’raan) a source of life for the hearts and a cure for what is within the chests. In general, there is nothing more beneficial for the heart than the recitation of Qur’aan with reflection and pondering upon it with deep thought. It also comprehensively places together the (different) levels of the traveler (in this worldly life), the condition of the one who implements it, along with the status of the one who possesses knowledge. From it (the Qur’aan,) the following are inherited:

* Love
* Yearning
* Fear
* Hope
* Returning to Allaah (in repentance)
* Trust
* Satisfaction
* Authority
* Commitment
* Gratitude
* Patience

With this, various other conditions which are the sources of life for the heart and perfection of it are also inherited. The Qur’aan also refrains and rebukes blameworthy actions and attributes along with that which corrupts and destroys the heart. The recitation of an ayah upon its contemplation is far better than completing the recitation of the Qur’aan without pondering and thought, also more favorable in obtaining al-Eemaan and in tasting the sweetness of the Qur’aan
