On the authority of Ibn Abbas, he said: Jews came to Allaah's
Messenger (صلى الله عليه وسلم) & said: Tell us
what thunder is?
He replied: It is an angel from Allaah's angels that is set over clouds & in whose hands is a mikhraaq (1) by which he drives clouds away, directing them where Allaah commands him.
They said: And what is that sound (of thunder) that we hear?
He said: It is the sound of his voice.
They said: You have spoken rightly.

*** Ikrimah said that whenever Ibn Abbass (رضي الله عنه) heard the sound of thunder, he would say: “Glorified is the One Whom you (addressing the angel) have glorified. And he said: Thunder is an angel that shouts to rain, the way a shepherd shouts to his sheep.”
