The
people of knowledge have differed with regards to the explanation of Al Hasad
(envy):
Some
of them said: “Desiring the disappearance of
the blessing from the other” and others stated that Al Hasad is
“Hating/Disliking that which Allaah has
bestowed upon other than him.”
The definition preferred by Shaykh ul-Islaam ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله
is,
“if the slave dislikes/hates that which Allaah
has bestowed upon other than him, then he has envied him, even if he doesn't
desire its disappearance.”
