Sheikh ibn Baaz (May Allaah have mercy upon him) was asked:
Is the Witr prayer different than the night
prayer in terms of it’s timing, the duaa that is made in the two prayers, as
well as the number of units of prayer that is made in it?
His Reply was:
The Witr prayer is part of the night prayer. It
is from the Sunnah and something that is recommended to do. It is the
way in which the night prayer should be completed or finished. The
Witr prayer is one unit of prayer, in which you end the night prayer.
This is done either at the end of the night, in the middle of the night or even
in the beginning of the night after the Isha prayer.
You pray that which is
easy for you to do, then you end it up by praying one unit of prayer. You read
in this last unit of prayer the Fatihah and Surah al Ikhlaas. This is the Witr
prayer. We know this from the statement of the Prophet, “Make the end of your
prayers of the night Witr (Narrated by both Al Bukhari and Muslim).
The Qunoot is made after the Ruku (bowing position) buy the duaa that is known
from the Sunnah (O Allah make us from those that you have guided… (to the end
of the duaa)). This is the duaa that the Prophet taught Al Hasan bin Ali, and then the
person is to make duaa for that which they want from the good.
